We are looking forward to a lovely high of 90*F today. Fantastic! So, my running has been going well, but I’ve been just sweating like crazy out there. It’s disgusting .

On Saturday I had a lovely group run through the local wildlife area, which was lots of fun. I ended up doing 6.5 miles that day. On Sunday (yesterday), I had planned on doing a long run of 10 miles, but the heat just got to me absolutely and I didn’t have anything so I ended up cutting it down to 5 miles, which was a little bit disappointing. But I was just dieing and had to take serious walk breaks so I didn’t think it was worth it try to finish. It probably didn’t help that I wasn’t carrying anything to drink.

This morning I had a nice 3 miles run aside from the heat. I am going to have to start getting up much earlier to run in the summer I think. Although we are at a disadvantage here because the sun comes up around 5am. It’s weird to wake up at 5:20am and just have sun blaring in through the window. Hopefully tonight will be cooler when I do my second run of the day. Probably just a quick 2 miles – I kind of like the super short fast runs, they are over so quickly!

I managed to get out running twice today despite a very very long day at work, so today was a victory. I ran 3 miles this morning in just under 27 minutes and another 2 miles tonight in 16:37. I felt awesome on tonight’s run, it is surprising how good evening runs feel! I’m actually really happy since I’ve run …. I left the screen for a couple minute and now I have no idea what I was going on about with that sentence. But yeah, I had a great run tonight. Oh and I’ve run 6 times in the last 4 days, which is pretty sweet. YEAH.

Tomorrow (Friday) should be a few easy miles, say 4 or 5, Saturday will be a group run – maybe 5 or 6 speedy miles, and Sunday I’m going to do a 10 mile long run. Accountability, it’s important.

I got in an easy 4 miles this morning in the Wildlife Area/Swamps/Public hunting area near by. I took it slow and took a couple walk breaks, so I absolutely was not out to break any speed records today. But it was a nice day to be outside – maybe a bit warm! I don’t do well in the heat, I wilt like the delicate flower that I am… right.

Last night I had planned to meet up with a local running Tuesday night running group, but I got there ridiculously early and I was feeling shy, so I decided to just get in 4 miles by myself. Again, it was a bit warm and sunny and the out and back trail was super boring, but I did pretty well. Especially considering that this was a sans Ipod run, which is not my norm. I used to never run with music, but it is absolutely a crutch now. Come to think of it, I used to never run with garmin until a couple years ago (I started running before they were invented! That makes me feel old.) No garmin, no music, no Road ID, just a plain old timex and a pair of running shoes. Okay, I wore running clothes too.

I want this to be a really good summer of training, lots of running – I’m starting running doubles this week, even though I’m still doing super low mileage, just so my body gets used to training that often and I think running doubles helps get me in shape faster, as well as brings the body fat down quicker for whatever reason. Holy shit that was a run-on sentence with like 8 commas. You wouldn’t know it, but I was in fact an English major in college. Anyway, this summer I’m gonna get super buff and get ready for a fall marathon – FOR REAL THIS TIME I SWEAR. Sorry, I had to break out the caps lock for emphasis. I am thinking about running the Philly marathon, or possibly Cape Cod. The Milwaukee Lakefront marathon already closed, so that is out. I would love to run a marathon with my friend Ash from home, but we’ll see about that.

I just went through a bit of a running slump post-Trailbreaker. Even though I had an amazing race, I had post-PR-sucky run syndrome that left me not particularly motivated to run or post about running. I didn’t end up running the Wisconsin Marathon – I switched and run the Half Marathon instead. It wasn’t an easy decision, but my training just wasn’t where it needed to be, so ultimately I’m glad that is what I decided to do. And, boy it was a tough day! Between the warmer temps/sun and my general lack of caring about running, I ran very poorly (1:58 and change), but I got my race shirt and my mettle, so it’s cool.

I don’t know how some of you bloggers do it with the consistent posting, I have had the worst time trying to get in a rhythm with blogging. Closing the WordPress tab on my firefox window, was probably the kiss of death. Okay, my goal for this week is to run every day and blog everyday – even if it’s stupid.

19 Miles later… http://www.runforit.org/?p=51 Mon, 15 Mar 2010 14:24:04 +0000 http://www.runforit.org/?p=51 So, yesterday (Sunday, March 14), I ran 19 miles – my longest run yet for this training cycle. (fyi – I’m typing this with both my laptop and an extremely large purring orange cat on my lap, so I can’t vouch for my typing skills.) I had planned on doing 20 miles but things didn’t really come together for that. However, it was still pretty much a success in my mind.

I was meeting a friend from the Daily Mile at 8am to our start long runs. We had originally planned on 7am, but daylight savings time foiled me again so we pushed back the time to 8am. I got up around 7, and thankfully the forecast was 40F with no rain, so I got dressed in my running gear – running capris, a short sleeve tech shirt and a thin zippered hoody jacket, and ate 1/2 a cup of oatmeal with a tablespoon of pb and 1/2 a cup of coffee. I left the house at 7:30 and got to the bike trail parking lot 20 minutes later.

It was really nice meeting Cara! It was such a nice change running with someone else for my long run and she definitely wasn’t an internet creeper. We started running down the bike path and chatting away, so much that we ran our first mile in 8:10. Whoops, neither of us had any plans to run our long run at 8:10 pace. After a few miles we settled into 8:45 or so pace, which felt pretty good and the bike path scenery was pretty so the miles went by quickly.

Except that my stomach started to bother me and unfortunately all of the bathrooms along the course were locked. By the time we got to the trail head – we had started about 7 miles out from it – I was ready to pop a squat, so I was incredibly relieved when to find out that those bathrooms were open.  I’ll spare you the details, but I’m seriously considering writing thank you notes to the local Park Dept for keeping that building unlocked.

I took my first chocolate GU post-bathroom break and we set back off on the bike path, still feeling pretty good. My legs started to tighten up and my feet were hurting by around the 13 mile mark – although we did manage to hit 13.1 miles in 1:54 and change. Not too bad! I stopped to stretch out around 14 miles and soon after I got really hungry and started falling apart. When we got back to where we had parked at 14.5 miles,  I took my 2nd GU, but I didn’t feel much better. I split up Cara after the 16 mi and she went on to run a total of 22.5 miles – beast! I got through another 3 miles that included a sorry amount of walk breaks and few 11minute miles, for a total of 19 and was more than happy with that. I even made a quick excursion to Pick’N’Save at 18 miles for a pee break and a nutella and graham cracker sample. holy moly, it was delicious, I would have seriously gone back for seconds if I could have gotten away with it.

Total: 19 miles in 2:57 or 9:18/mile

On the race front, my schedule has changed. I didn’t run the Shamrock 5k on Saturday and now I’m not planning on doing the Southshore Half Marathon. Instead I’m going to run the Trailbreaker 1/2 Marathon on Waukesha on March 27th because I think it will be a nicer race and it fits into my training schedule much better.

Yet Another Run http://www.runforit.org/?p=46 http://www.runforit.org/?p=46#comments Tue, 09 Mar 2010 19:34:32 +0000 http://www.runforit.org/?p=46 Just got back from a quick 5 mile recovery run (44:08 or 8:49/mile for anyone keeping score), I feel good mentally and it was a nice run. It felt very short, which I suppose is a side effect of doing these crazy long runs. The only downside is that my legs feel kind of out of it and my left knee felt achy. I am a little bit concerned about that and I absolutely don’t want to get sidelined with an injury, so I’m going to make an effort to really take it easy this week. So, I’ll be resting when I feel like resting, running slower than I can run and maybe even forcing myself to do some cross training. I don’t have a gym membership right now, so I don’t have an elliptical machine or exercise bike to use, but I’ll figure something out.

So, I’m not sure if I’m going to race that 5k on Saturday or not, but I will be running 20 miles on Sunday. So BRING IT ON.

I also got a 26.2 magnet for my car,  but I’ll have to photograph that later.  I haven’t read the book yet, but I will post a review after I do. I did, however, test out the sunglasses today on my run.They are awesome, I highly recommend them!  A really nice change from going blind from all the snow/sun reflections and they are super comfortable to run in. I don’t have any pictures of me wearing them,  so you’re spared from seeing my face. Shucks.

Sunday Long Runs http://www.runforit.org/?p=44 Mon, 08 Mar 2010 14:55:21 +0000 http://www.runforit.org/?p=44 Yesterday, I ran a 17 mile long run on Milwaukee’s Lakefront, it was gorgeous. I especially loved Lake Park, since it sits between the waterfront and a neighborhood of amazingly beautiful (and enormous) million dollar houses. The architecture of these houses is just stunning and every single one is different, I wish I had thought to bring my camera with me yesterday. It was a nice change from running in my dinky town all the time, although I could have done without the 40 minute drive both ways.

I also came to the conclusion that wearing my fuel belt screws me up mentally. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I find that when I’m supposed to be doing my long run and I’m wearing that thing, all I can think about is how long until I take a break, and then I end up taking a million walking breaks during my run, which I talked about last week. I was having a pretty crappy, can’t focus, slippery ice is annoying kind of run through about the 6 or 7 mile mark, until I decided I should run back to my car, dump the fuel belt and then get on with the damn thing.  And miraculously, I had a much better run for the rest of it.  I think the problem is that wearing a fuel belt is a reminder, this is not a normal run, this is a long run, you are going to be running for hours, you look like a spaz, this is going to be boring, might as well save some energy by taking a walk break about here.

Well, next week I have plans to run a 20 mile long run with a friend I met on Daily Mile and I think that will make a big difference. I’m also still on the fence about that 5k next Saturday, I need someone to help me decide if I should run it or not.
